East is East is a dream born from the minds and hearts of Mustafa and Razaviah, siblings of Afghan descent. Fleeing Afghanistan during the Soviet war, their family relocated to India, where they traveled extensively, immersing themselves in the country’s rich language, art, and cuisine.
Upon migrating to Canada, their immigrant journey deepened their belief in creating spaces where a vibrant cultural exchange between East and West could flourish. They sought to move beyond the conventional ethnic restaurants they encountered, and thus created East is East — a hub where strong men and women from diverse cultures could feel at home in a place without boundaries.
Their fusion approach to food, ambiance, music, and art creates a sense of universality while preserving the essence of the Eastern heritage they brought with them. Embracing the growing lifestyle movement toward health and sustainability, East is East integrates local and organic food into its menu, uses sustainably harvested materials for interiors, and continually works to reduce its carbon footprint.
Anyone who has traveled along the ancient Silk Road will be familiar with the quaint dhabbas — small eateries that have served adventurous travelers for centuries. Today, these dhabbas have evolved into charming street vendors scattered along the Silk Road from Mongolia through Tibet, India, Persia, and all the way to Istanbul.
